Class Descriptions

Yoga Xpress: 45-minute class, the class could be Gentle Yoga, Level 1, Open or Level 2. See information below.

Open or Mixed Level:
Mixed levels in the same class. Students work at their own pace and ability level.

Gentle Yoga:
A gentler, slower-paced practice for people of all sizes, ages and fitness levels. Great for those recovering from surgery (depending on which kind) and in physiotherapy. Could be re-named as "Yoga for people who think they cannot do yoga!"

Level 1:
A moderately-paced class for beginners with knowledge of the basics that builds strength, flexibility, and concentration. Continued emphasis on breathing and healthy alignment.

Vinyasa Level 2:
An intermediate class for those wishing to deepen their practice with a cardio element, hand balances and intermediate poses. Vinyasa means flow, so during class the students move or flow from one pose to the next rather than hold one pose for a longer time.

Core Strength: A Vinyasa class, focusing on the core (under the neck to the hips.)  This is an area often compromised by poor posture, injuries, age, pregnancies, and the like.  A Vinyasa practice incorporates poses to strengthen the core, yet keeps flexiblity in the arms, shoulders, back and abdominal area.

Pre-Natal:
A class designed specifically for women during this unique stage of life. The focus is on stretching and strengthening areas of the body used during childbirth. Breathing, meditation, and restorative postures are incorporated.

Mommy and Me:
Great quality time with your baby.  It also helps Mommy get back into shape after her pregnancy.  You need to pre-register for this class.

Donation Class: A basic Open class. Suggested donation is $10. Feel free to pay nothing, or whatever you'd like.

Belly Dance Fitness:
The Belly Dance class is a fitness class targeting all parts of the body for a high-cardio, ab toning, thigh trimming workout.

Gentle Yoga:  Have you heard somewhere that even people in hospitals do yoga? This is true!
If they can, so can YOU! Our Gentle Yoga is for you!
In Gentle Yoga, our teachers incorporate pranayama, gentle asanas and meditation in every class.

Focus is on:

  1. Proper spinal alignment for every pose.
  2. Advising students to move gently through and within poses.
  3. Incorporating spinal stabilization exercises in every class.
  4. Featuring poses that are comfortable and steady.
  5. Encouraging participants to rest whenever needed.
  6. Making students aware of when to use a chair or wall.

YOGA 4 KIDS:  Why is Yoga so Good for Kids?  Yoga strengthens kids and helps them become more flexible and coordinated. It increases strength in muscles that are under worked in most children's sports.  Yoga for kids enhances self-awareness. Children who practice yoga learn early on to tune into their bodies. Self esteem is bolstered as the children gain control over their bodies and minds.
Yoga for kids is designed to enhance imagination and empathy.  Games and stories are often incorporated in the practice.   Unlike the usual sports for kids yoga teaches children to have fun and move their bodies in a non-competitive environment.

Yoga encourages children to master themselves rather than wait for an adult to control them.

Yoga for Teens: Demand for yoga classes from teenagers is accelerating as more and more young people want a healthier lifestyle.  Teenagers also say they are looking for something to help them make sense of a chaotic world.

Like adults, contemporary teenagers are goal- and achievement-oriented, operating under relentless academic pressure and a treacherous adolescent social jungle. These young people say that while it is fitness that draws them to yoga, it is the deeper aspect of the practice that keeps them coming back to their mats. Teenagers are tribal and want to practice yoga with their peers, to their own music and in their own space.
